Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Reno NV
214 AM PST Wed Dec 11 2024
.SYNOPSIS...
* Quick hitting cold storm to bring light snow and travel impacts
to the Sierra Wednesday night into Thursday morning. Dusting of
snow into W.Nevada foothills, with commute impacts possible.
* Wetter but warmer storm Friday night and Saturday with snow
impacts for mountains and rain with gusty winds for valleys.
* Third storm possible Monday into Tuesday which looks to be
another quick moving and colder system which could yield
additional travel impacts along Sierra passes.
&&
.DISCUSSION...
Our pattern will begin to turn more active for the remainder of
the week as a series of storms create likely travel impacts in
the Sierra Wednesday night into Thursday followed by a wetter
system Friday night into Saturday.
STORM 1: Wednesday Night - Thursday
* This storm, the colder of the two systems this week, has been
trending wetter over the past 48 hours. Snowfall will primarily
impact the Sierra, with light snow showers possible down to
western Nevada valleys during the Thursday morning commute.
* Snow levels will reside around 4,000-5,000 with impacts on
Sierra passes concentrated in a 4-6 hour period centered around
4-8 AM, with snowfall rates reaching 1/hour. Snow rates will
decrease by late morning, with total accumulations of 4-8 inches
on the Sierra crest, and 1-4 inches around lake level and in
Mono County, including June Lake and Mammoth Lakes.
* Western Nevada valleys could see light snow showers during the
Thursday morning commute which could see minor accumulations
above about 5000-5500. 40-50% chances of a half inch of snow
particularly through Washoe Valley, western foothills, and the
North Valleys.
* Gusty southwest winds are possible early Thursday morning with
gusts near 30-35 mph and up to 45 mph through wind prone areas,
particularly through the US-395 corridor in Mono County.
STORM 2: Friday Night - Saturday
* This will be a slightly wetter and warmer system with snow
levels rising around 6,000-7,500` along the Sierra. Impacts
again will concentrate in the Sierra with storm total snowfall
increasing to around 8-12" along the Sierra crest . Higher
uncertainty with snow totals for lower elevation Sierra
communities but currently projecting 2-6".
* Mainly looking at rainfall for far western Nevada valleys on
Saturday with spillover rain of about 0.20-0.40".
* Gusty conditions are possible Saturday morning with gusts
generally reaching 30-40 mph with wind prone locations along
US-395 through Lassen county reaching 40-50 mph. Sierra
ridgetops could exceed 100 mph.
Early Next Week:
* Rain and snow will taper off through the day on Sunday with
another quick moving storm behind it on Monday.
* This storm is looking similar to our system on Thursday with a
quick hit of Sierra snowfall with lower snow levels. Early
projections put about 6 inches along the Sierra crest which
could create another round of Sierra travel impacts. Fuentes
&&
.AVIATION...
* VFR conditions will prevail today but an incoming storm system
will begin to increase mountain wave turbulence along and east
of the Sierra with FL100 southwest wind gusts of 50-70kt
possible this afternoon and evening.
* Quick hitting storm is likely to bring snow accumulations to
Sierra terminals such as SVE, TRK, TVL, MMH between 6z-18z/Thurs,
with a 50-70% chance of 1". High end amounts (90th percentile)
of 3-4".
* Light snow showers will be possible down to western Nevada
terminals with a 10-20% chance of 0.1" of snow at KRNO, KCXP,
and KMEV Thursday morning with KRTS seeing a 40-50% chance of up
to 0.5" of snow. Fuentes/Chris
